HHS SECRETARY TOM PRICE, M.D. VISITS THE DISPENSARY OF HOPE

The Dispensary of Hope, headquartered in Nashville, TN, welcomed Secretary Tom Price of the Department of Health and Human Services to their home office and distribution center on Tuesday.

Christopher Palombo, The Dispensary of Hope CEO, said, “The Dispensary of Hope welcomed the opportunity to talk to a government leader whose work impacts the healthcare of our nation.  We wanted Secretary Price to be aware of the generosity at work here, both of the dispensing site partners and the generic pharmaceutical manufacturers in serving the healthcare needs of vulnerable and uninsured Americans.”

Secretary Price commented on his visit, “The real innovators, problem-solvers, and healers are not just in Washington, D.C.—they’re in Nashville, Tennessee.  I got to see that work first-hand at Dispensary of Hope on Tuesday. Their collaborations are helping to ensure that medicines are not wasted and that those in need get them. Thank you to the team at Dispensary of Hope for walking me through your operation this week.”

Research, conducted by the Advisory Board Company at Saint Thomas Health, shows significant cost reductions across the health care system for patients who are served by the Dispensary of Hope network, highlighted by a reduction in the average cost per inpatient visit, a reduction in the cost per visit to the emergency department, and improved health outcomes year after year for patients with chronic conditions.

Mr. Palombo added, “There will always be Americans who need access to medicine due to difficult economic circumstances and lack of insurance.  For these Americans, the generosity of the donating pharmaceutical manufacturers and the clinical support from dispensing site partners is a lifeline to stabilize complex health conditions, creating a better quality of life.”

Ascension and Saint Thomas Health, the lead funder and host of the Dispensary of Hope collaborative, conveyed to Secretary Price that America needs the Dispensary of Hope to expand across the country to even more dispensing sites.  With estimates of 28.4 million uninsured in America1, the Dispensary of Hope, an industry-to-industry partnership, is reducing health care costs and, more importantly, is serving the most vulnerable of Americans; providing needed medicine at no cost as an effective way to treat health conditions and improve patient health outcomes.

The Dispensary of Hope distribution network is a remarkable collaborative that connects generous donations of medicine from drug manufacturers to qualified patients through a nation-wide distribution system of outpatient pharmacies and charitable clinics.  Qualified patients have benefited from over 671,000 prescriptions over the last year.  For more information about the Dispensary of Hope, donating medicine or becoming a dispensing site, please go to: www.dispensaryofhope.org.
